This week’s casino news starts us off with some sad news in New Orleans where a casino collapse has left one person dead. The Hard Rock Casino can expect some lawsuits in the coming months as a result of this disaster.
New Orleans’ Hard Rock Casino Construction Collapse Leaves At Least One Dead
The collapse of the Hard Rock Casino under construction in downtown New Orleans has left one dead and three people missing. The story went viral this past week when video of the collapse made its way around Twitter. Unfortunately, the construction malfunction has cost at least one person their life.
The moment the building fell, which was caught on stunning video, left construction workers sprinting from the site trying to avoid the wreckage. The superintendent of the New Orleans Fire Department Tim McConnell has confirmed one fatality while noting that they are still looking for the three other people that haven’t been found since the building collapsed. A total of 18 people were taken to hospital for treatment following the incident. There were reports at least 45 people were working on the structure at the time that it came down.
According to the official report, the upper six to eight floors of the structure collapsed and brought the majority of the rest of the building down with them. Officials still haven’t confirmed what caused the disaster.
The Hard Rock Casino in New Orleans was scheduled to open in the spring of 2020 but this will obviously set that date back.
First U.S. Sports Arena Sportsbook To Open At Washington’s Capital One Arena
The home of the NHL’s Washington Capitals and the NBA’s Washington Wizards is about to make history. That is because the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. is set to become the first U.S. sports arena to officially operate a sportsbook after ownership groups for both teams announced its official partnership with the William Hill Sportsbook. The sportsbook inside the Capital One Arena is expected to be fully functional and remain open even when there isn’t a game in progress within the building.
While the addition of the sportsbook still needs regulatory approval before it can launch, insiders close to the situation have noted they don’t foresee any reason why the project will not push forward as planned. The Chairman and CEO of the ownership group Ted Leonsis, who has been a longtime advocate for expanded betting within the United States, has played a key role in the addition of a sports betting site on the grounds of the arena.
